Shadows and Convexity of Surfaces

چکیده
We study the geometry and topology of immersed surfaces in Euclidean 3-space whose Gauss map satis es a certain two-piece-property, and solve the \shadow problem" formulated by H. Wente.

I. The existence of differences and similarities in the sur- 4. face features not only of different organisms or groups but also within given species has been demonstrated by a variety of techniques. 2. The different reactions of various organisms to the Gram stain might well be taken as one piece of evidence, the use of the electron microscop and associated preparative techniques (includi...
متن کاملGeometry of shadows.
Shadows provide a strong source of information about the shapes of surfaces. We analyze the local geometric structure of shadow contours on piecewise smooth surfaces. Particular attention is paid to intrinsic shadows on a surface: that is, shadows created on a surface by the surface's own shape and placement relative to a light source. Intrinsic shadow contours provide useful information about ...
متن کاملThe perception of 3-D shape from shadows cast onto curved surfaces.
In a natural environment, cast shadows abound. Objects cast shadows both upon themselves and upon background surfaces. Previous research on the perception of 3-D shape from cast shadows has only examined the informativeness of shadows cast upon flat background surfaces. In outdoor environments, however, background surfaces often possess significant curvature (large rocks, trees, hills, etc.), a...
متن کاملTopological changes in the apparent contour of convex sets
We analyse the topological changes occuring in the apparent contour of a collection of disjointconvex sets from a moving viewpoint, and relate them to the classical visual event surfaces, sweptby tritangent rays and limiting bitangent rays. Specifically, we show that all topological changesoccur as the viewpoint crosses these surfaces or the plane containing some flat object, an...
متن کاملRemoving car shadows in video images using entropy and Euclidean distance features
Detecting car motion in video frames is one of the key subjects in computer vision society. In recent years, different approaches have been proposed to address this issue. One of the main challenges of developed image processing systems for car detection is their shadows. Car shadows change the appearance of them in a way that they might seem stitched to other neighboring cars. This study aims ...
